KAWARA TILE
KAWARA TILE

We have considered the specific characteristics and material of tiles used in homes. With the protection and decoration functions, this material is recognized for roof and multi-surface coverings and has been used for many years from ancient civilizations. The origin of tiles dates back to 2700 BC, in ancient Egypt. Then from the 6th century, they were brought into Japan with Buddhism and were named “Shiki-Gawara” (laying out roof tiles) or “Haritsuke-Kawara” (pasting roof tiles). Imported from Egypt and Europe through the silk road, these distinctive overseas-made roof tiles have been developed by an original way of fabrication in Japan. Nowadays such western tiles are coated with a glaze and mainly used around the water points of houses. After having studied their history, we focused on tiles traditionally used in Japanese architecture to create an original product that fits any modern Japanese houses, and leverage the function and exclusive beauty of the original ones. We found out that traditional Japanese roof tiles have other functions such as absorbing and adjusting the humidity, very important in Japan. They are not only protecting the surface from water but also keeping the interior space comfortable. To materialize this project, we chose the manufacturer Daiei Yogyo who produces for more than 400 years high quality roof tiles called Awaji-Kawara. The fine particles of clay are fired at temperatures over 1000 degrees Celsius, giving the beautiful oxidized silver color to the tiles. Through a same material, this work of art symbolizes the link of the past to the present.
